Noorjehan Bilgrami established KOEL in 1977, with the primary objective of reviving traditional hand-block printing techniques in Pakistan. Introducing this age-old craft to home furnishing and women’s apparel was such a huge success that, within ten years, scores of block-printing karkhanas (workshops) had been set up by entrepreneurs, providing jobs to hundreds of craftsmen. Today, KOEL also works with high quality hand-embroidery and other embellishments on fabric, setting high standards to create a unique niche in the upmarket fashion apparel sector in Pakistan. Almost all the fabric used at KOEL is exclusively designed silk and cotton, woven on handlooms by renowned master weavers of Pakistan.
