Sunbird is a social enterprise launched in November 2015 to fulfill a lofty ambition: use the traditional kathas to change the lives of street women and to support and change the lives of the children of these formerly trafficked, displaced or widowed women through free education.
Katha stitching is used to make simple quilts, commonly known as Nakshi Kantha, by women in Bangaladesh who typically use old saris and cloth and layer them with kantha stitch to make a light blanket, throw or bedspread, especially for children.
The Katha making is also used as a therapy technique to keep these women occupied during the day while they go through counselling. The idea is to give them an opportunity for an alternate life and means of livelihood. Smitten by the formidable spirits of these women despite their heart breaking stories, Sunbird partners with women artisans to produce Katha Wear which are then designed as jackets, vests, capes and bags.
